EPISODE 10

The first morning after was ordinary in all the ways that felt extraordinary. He made eggs. She found an extra toothbrush still in its packaging under his bathroom sink and chose not to think about that too hard. They sat at his kitchen island in the early light and ate without rushing and it felt so much like something real that it scared her a little.
What happened between them the night before had been everything she had been trying not to imagine for a month
He was unhurried and present in a way she had not expected, the same steadiness from the boardroom translated into something entirely different. He had taken his time with her like she was worth taking time with, his hands learning her slowly, and she had stopped thinking in words at some point and just existed in sensation. Her brown skin against his in the low light of his room. The sounds he drew out of her that she had not known she was capable of making. The way he said her name when he finally had all of her.
Afterward he had held her in a way that felt like a statement.
Now, eggs and morning light and a question she needed to ask.
“Does anyone at work know? Or suspect?”
He considered this. “Possibly Bola.” His PA. “She is perceptive. But she is also discreet.”
“And you want to keep it that way.”
“For now,” he said carefully. “Not because I am ashamed of you. Because you deserve to be known for your work first. What people think of you in that building should come from what you produce. Not from who you are to me.”
It was the right answer. She knew it was the right answer and she also felt the complicated weight of it.
She drove home to Yaba by eight. Tola was awake, sitting in the kitchen with tea, and took one look at Amara’s face.
“You slept with him.”
“Good morning to you too.”
“Amara.”
“Tola.”
“Are you okay?”
Amara sat down across from her best friend. Outside the window Yaba was already waking up, the street sounds rising, a new Lagos Saturday beginning.
“I think I am falling for him,” Amara said quietly. “And I do not know if that is the best or worst thing that has happened to me this year.”
Tola looked at her for a long moment. “Both,” she said finally. “It is probably both.”
