EPISODE 1

Nobody in Lagos talks about the moment a marriage truly ends. They talk about the wedding, the pregnancy, the separation. But the moment, the exact second a woman picks up a phone that was not meant for her and reads something that rewrites everything she thought she knew, that part they leave out of the story. Shade Coker was about to become very familiar with that moment.
It started the way most catastrophic things start. Quietly. Ordinarily. A Tuesday evening in the house she and Dami had shared before the divorce, where she was staying temporarily while her Lekki apartment was being repainted. Zara was asleep. The house was calm. Dami’s phone was on the kitchen counter because he had gone upstairs to shower and he was the kind of man who left his phone face up, unlocked, because he had always had nothing to hide.
Until now.
The screen lit up with a message preview. Shade was not trying to read it. She just looked up at the wrong moment.
I know you said this is not the end. I have been trying not to think about what that means. I cannot stop.
The sender name at the top said Amara.
Shade stood in her kitchen holding a glass of water and read the preview three times. Then she set the glass down very carefully, like if she was gentle enough with it the rest of the night might also stay intact.
It did not.
By the time Dami came back downstairs in his t-shirt and damp skin, Shade was sitting at the kitchen table with his phone in front of her and an expression on her face that he recognized immediately.
The expression of a woman who now knows exactly what she had been sensing for weeks and had been telling herself she was imagining.
“Shade,” he said.
“Sit down,” she said quietly. “And do not lie to me. Not once. Not even the small kind.”
Upstairs, Zara slept on, unaware that the careful arrangement her parents had been building was about to come apart like wet paper.
