EPISODE 7

The workday was the longest of her life. She sat at her desk and produced actual work, which surprised her, because her mind was doing something else entirely.

At five forty-five the office started emptying. She watched people gather bags, exchange goodnights, file toward the elevator. Tola messaged at five-fifty: Leaving now. You coming?

Amara typed back: Working late. I will see you tomorrow.

A pause. Then Tola: Amara.

It is fine.

If you say so. Text me when you are home.

At six she knocked on his office door. He said come in and she did.

He was at his desk but he stood when she entered, which she had not expected. The office was large and dim, only the desk lamp on, Lagos glittering through the floor-to-ceiling glass behind him like the city had arranged itself as a backdrop specifically for this moment.

“I want you to stop asking me that,” she said, “and do something about it.”

He kissed her.

Not rushed. Not frantic. Slow and deep and certain, one hand coming up to her jaw, tilting her face exactly where he wanted it, and Amara felt the last three weeks of careful professionalism dissolve completely. She kissed him back with everything she had been holding in a closed fist since that first elevator ride and he made a low sound against her mouth that she felt in her spine.

When they finally pulled apart she was gripping the front of his shirt.

“This changes things,” he said.

“Everything,” she agreed.

Outside the glass, Lagos moved on, unbothered. Inside that dim office, something that could not be undone had officially begun
